You know that feeling when you're waiting for your tree to bring back a seasonal special?

That's what it's like being a Cathy Matete fan. The Kenyan songstress takes her time between releases, but when she blossoms, she bears sweet fruit.

Her latest offering – a reggae-infused take on Anita Baker's "Sweet Love" fits just right, feels familiar, yet somehow becomes entirely her own. she's taken a classic and draped it in new clothes that feel like they were always meant to be there.

Working with Brazilian-born, Atlanta-based producer Rafael Labate (Raflabs Studio), Matete hasn't just covered Baker's song – she's had a conversation with it.

Her rich vocals settle into the melody like honey in warm tea, while the reggae arrangement wraps around the original's soul like a soft blanket on a cool evening.

What's remarkable here isn't just the technical execution – it's how comfortable it all feels.

Matete navigates this reimagining with the ease of someone walking through their own garden. She knows every corner, every shade, every bloom, yet still manages to make us see it all with fresh eyes.

The result?

A version that doesn't try to outshine Baker's original but instead stands beside it, offering a different kind of warmth.

It's like when you hear two good friends laugh together – neither laugh diminishes the other, they just create something beautiful together.

For those of us who wait patiently between Matete's releases, this cover reminds us why we don't mind the wait. Some artists don't need to flood the market – they just need to show up at exactly the right moment with exactly the right note.

Skip Marley's "Close to You": When Past Meets Present https://louditup.com/skip-marleys-close-to-you-when-past-meets-present https://louditup.com/skip-marleys-close-to-you-when-past-meets-present - Contributer,

Man, when an artist takes on a beloved classic, it's always a bit of a tightrope walk.

But Skip Marley?

He's out here making it look effortless with his fresh take on Maxi Priest's "Close to You." This isn't just another cover – it's a whole vibe reimagined for today's ears.

First off, let's talk about that production. Rykeyz (yeah, the same wizard behind hits for Jessie Reyez, Demi Lovato, and Wiz Khalifa) brings his A-game here.

The way he's managed to preserve the soul of the original while giving it that contemporary bounce?

That's some next-level stuff.

It's like watching your favorite vintage car get a modern engine – same classic look, but now it purrs differently.

There's this beautiful moment where the iconic chorus hits, and it's both familiar and brand new at the same time.

It's like running into an old friend who's had a seriously impressive glow-up. The way he's woven that slow-burning reggae groove with a beat that makes your head nod automatically – pure magic.

What really sets this apart is how Skip manages to walk that fine line between respect and innovation.

He's not just copying and pasting Maxi's magic; he's adding his own chapters to the story. His verses slide in smooth as butter, bringing fresh energy while keeping that timeless reggae spirit alive and kicking.

This isn't just about a young artist covering an old tune – it's about bridging generations.

Skip's taking what made the original so special and introducing it to a whole new crowd who might be discovering this melody for the first time. And for those of us who grew up with Maxi's version?

We're getting to fall in love with it all over again.

Skip's version of "Close to You" hits differently. It's got that rare quality where every listen reveals something new – a little vocal run here, a subtle production touch there.

Skip Marley isn't just carrying on the family name; he's carving out his own lane, and this track is proof positive. It's the kind of music that makes you grateful for both the original and this fresh interpretation. In a world of covers and remakes, this one stands tall as an example of how to do it right.

Khalia's long-awaited debut EP, "Stay True," has finally graced our ears, but it seems like she's played it safe. The album boasts impressive collaborations with artists like Mortimer, Shaggy, and the incredible Tanya Stephens, all under the skillful production of Tony CD Kelly.

While the production is undeniably polished and premium, it doesn't quite reach the anticipated brilliance many were hoping for. Khalia, is known for her outstanding singles, but the dynamics of this debut collection leaves discerning fans unquenched considering the wait for greatness.

However, it's important to note that "Stay True" is still a praiseworthy production that showcases Khalia's potential as a true star in the making. Despite its safe approach, it hints at the promising future that lies ahead for this talented artist.

Jamaica's Music Export Decline: Analyzing Certifiedstreams' September Top 200 Report https://louditup.com/jamaicas-music-export-decline-analyzing-certifiedstreams-september-top-200-report https://louditup.com/jamaicas-music-export-decline-analyzing-certifiedstreams-september-top-200-report Lloyd Laing, Music Analyst -

Certifiedstreams' Homegrown Top 200 report for September has cast a shadow over the usually vibrant Jamaican music export scene. While the nation's musical exports have been a source of pride and celebration, the recent statistics paint a rather somber picture of the industry's health.

The most alarming figure in the report is the significant drop in Spotify streams, plummeting by 11.62% compared to August.

In a music landscape increasingly reliant on streaming revenue, this sharp decline is deeply concerning. Jamaican music went from amassing 35.1 million streams in August to just over 31 million in September. This trend raises questions about the industry's ability to maintain its position as a streaming powerhouse.

YouTube, another crucial platform for music promotion, also witnessed an 11.8% drop in music video views, falling from 43.2 million in August to 38.1 million in September. The decline in viewership here is a worrying sign, especially considering the visual aspect of music videos has played a significant role in shaping the cultural narrative of Jamaican music.

While radio plays experienced only a 2% decline, it's a minor consolation compared to the substantial drops in streaming platforms' numbers. SoundCloud, often a platform for emerging talent, took a severe hit with a 13.9% decrease in plays from August to September.

This raises concerns about the vibrancy of Jamaica's music scene, as it suggests that even grassroots support for local talent is diminishing.

However, amidst these concerning trends, there is a glimmer of hope. The report highlights an 11.2% increase in Soca and afrobeat driven music fusion exports.

This suggests that listeners are exploring new and diverse sounds that resonate with them on a deeper level, possibly finding them more authentic and relatable than the traditional homegrown Reggae and Dancehall.

This trend underscores the evolving global appeal of Caribbean music and its capacity for adaptation.

Furthermore, the report hints at the continued growth of staple genres like Reggaeton and Afrobeat, as well as the emergence of AfroCaribbean fusion.

While these trends signal potential competition for Jamaican music on the international stage, they also indicate the genre's ability to remain relevant by evolving and incorporating fresh elements.

In a nutshell,  The Certifiedstreams' Homegrown Top 200 report for September reveals a worrisome decline in Jamaican music exports, particularly on major streaming platforms like Spotify and YouTube.

This raises concerns about the industry's vitality in an era where streaming is a primary source of revenue.

However, the rise in Soca music exports and the growing influence of other Caribbean genres suggest that Jamaican music can still thrive globally.

To weather these challenges, the industry must adapt to changing dynamics and continue innovating to maintain its position as a musical powerhouse in the ever-evolving music landscape.

Concerns for Jamaican Reggae Artists as Non&Jamaican Acts Dominate US iTunes Chart https://louditup.com/concerns-for-jamaican-reggae-artists-as-non-jamaican-acts-dominate-us-itunes-chart https://louditup.com/concerns-for-jamaican-reggae-artists-as-non-jamaican-acts-dominate-us-itunes-chart - Justin Black, Staff Reporter

According to the Caribbean music metrics monitor Certifiedstreams, there is a "worrying trend" for Jamaican reggae artists on the United States Reggae iTunes Top 100 chart, which has been monitored for 75 days into 2023.

Out of the 12 charted songs released this year, only 3 are by Jamaican artists. Non-Jamaican artists from the US West Coast and other Caribbean countries such as Bermuda, Bahamas and Trinidad are dominating the chart.

This trend indicates that Jamaican reggae artists will struggle to maintain their presence in the US market due to increased competition from regional acts and non-Jamaicans in the coming year.

The lack of new releases from Jamaican artists also raises questions about their ability to promote their music effectively to the US market.

Lloyd Laing, Data Analyst at Certifiedstreams, stated that this trend is diluting the Jamaican cultural influence on Reggae music in the mainstream.

"The current state of the US Reggae iTunes Top 100 chart highlights the need for Jamaican reggae artists to adapt to the changing demands of the music industry. Failure to do so could result in a decline in their visibility and influence in the global music scene." Laing quipped in a short telephone call to kingston.

To remain relevant and competitive, Laing suggests that Jamaican reggae artists must revamp their marketing strategies and build relationships with industry influencers.

They must also be open to collaborations with non-Jamaican artists and incorporate contemporary styles and trends into their music while staying true to their roots.

As the music industry evolves, Jamaican reggae artists must be prepared to embrace change and stay ahead of the curve to maintain their position as pioneers in the industry and uphold the legacy of reggae music, which has been a significant contributor to the global music scene and has had a profound impact on various genres of music.

Reggae Legends Headline 20th Annual Reggae in the Desert Festival in Las Vegas https://louditup.com/reggae-legends-headline-20th-annual-reggae-in-the-desert-festival-in-las-vegas https://louditup.com/reggae-legends-headline-20th-annual-reggae-in-the-desert-festival-in-las-vegas - Kaati Gaffney, Contributor

The 20th annual Reggae in the Desert festival is set to bring a piece of Jamaican culture to Las Vegas on Saturday, May 6th.

For one day, Downtown Las Vegas will become a reggae paradise with live performances, island-inspired food and craft vendors. The festival boasts an impressive lineup, including the headliner, 2x Grammy award-winning band Morgan Heritage, who will be joined by reggae superstar Eek-A-Mouse, performing for the first time in the U.S. in over 15 years.

Other performers include the Legendary Wailers, Romain Virgo, Hempress Sativa, Junior Toots, Mellow Mood, local superstars Bonafide, and the host DJ Ramma.

Morgan Heritage, formed in 1994, is a Grammy-winning Jamaican reggae band that released their debut album, Miracles, in the same year. However, it took the music industry over 20 years to recognize their brilliance, despite millions of fans around the world.

In 2016, their album Strictly Roots won the Grammy Award in the Best Reggae Album category. Their latest album, Loyalty, released in 2019, gives fans a chance to understand why the band has been around for so many years.

According to the band’s member Peetah, “This album gives listeners a chance to take a deep dive into what the career of Morgan Heritage has given to humanity from our heart and soul for over the years.”

Eek-A-Mouse, a legendary Jamaican artist, is known for his unique vocal style, sing-jay, and his scatting style, which differs from the-then toasting deejays of the 80s. He established himself with an international audience with his 1988 album, Eek-A-Nomics, which featured a club hit with “The Freak.” Eek-A-Mouse recorded a song with hip-hop recording artist Ditch called “Smoke it up” (2007), which is featured on Ditch's CD Public Intoxication.

The artist has teamed up with Bounty Killer and Damian Marley in “Khaki Suit.”

The Wailers, known as one of the few bands that can claim genuine legend status, have a place in essential music history. Their music was and is culture-defining, embodying the spirit of 70s-era reggae. The band will be performing a special set featuring incredible cuts from Bob Marley’s formidable back catalog along with a string of their greatest, classic hits.

The Wailers released their first single off their album One World, One Prayer in late 2020. The album, which marks The Wailers’ return to the recording studios and the band’s first album in 25 years, was nominated for a Grammy in 2021.

Overall, the Reggae in the Desert festival promises to be a wonderful experience for all reggae enthusiasts in Las Vegas. The festival will be an opportunity to immerse oneself in Jamaican culture, savor the island-inspired food, and enjoy live performances by world-renowned reggae artists, including Morgan Heritage, Eek-A-Mouse, and The Wailers.

This year's festival will undoubtedly be a celebration of reggae culture and the genre’s rich history.

Is Jamaican Music Still Finding a Global Audience? https://louditup.com/is-jamaican-music-still-finding-a-global-audience https://louditup.com/is-jamaican-music-still-finding-a-global-audience  - @Reggaeology

Jamaican music, and specifically reggae music, has a long history of influencing and inspiring music worldwide. However, in recent years, some have wondered if the genre has lost its appeal or if it is still finding a global audience. In this white paper, we will explore the current state of Jamaican music and whether it is still gaining popularity worldwide.

Jamaican music has its roots in African rhythms and was heavily influenced by the traditional music of West Africa. It emerged in the early 1900s with the rise of mento music, a precursor to ska, rocksteady, and reggae.

Reggae music, which originated in the late 1960s, is one of the most recognizable forms of Jamaican music worldwide. It has been embraced by people of all backgrounds and cultures and has inspired countless artists across genres.

Jamaican music, including reggae, continues to be popular around the world. Despite challenges such as declining album sales and changes in the music industry, Jamaican music remains a significant cultural export for the country.

One factor that has helped to keep Jamaican music relevant is its ability to evolve and incorporate new influences while maintaining its roots. Reggae has been fused with other genres such as hip hop, pop, and electronic music, creating new sub-genres such as dancehall, reggaeton, and dubstep. These new styles have brought fresh audiences to Jamaican music and helped it to stay relevant.

Another factor is the continued popularity of live performances. Jamaican artists are still in demand and continue to tour globally, performing at festivals and venues all over the world. This provides exposure for the music and helps to keep it relevant in new markets.

Finally, the rise of social media and streaming services has allowed Jamaican music to reach a wider audience. Artists can share their music and connect with fans directly, without the need for record labels or traditional media outlets. Streaming services have also made it easier for fans to access Jamaican music from anywhere in the world.

In conclusion, while the music industry has undergone significant changes in recent years, Jamaican music, including reggae, continues to find a global audience. Its ability to evolve and incorporate new influences, its popularity as a live performance genre, and the rise of social media and streaming services have all helped to keep Jamaican music relevant and popular around the world. While the future of the music industry remains uncertain, Jamaican music is poised to continue to influence and inspire musicians and music lovers globally.

Reggae Revival Dominates The 37th Reggae Grammy List https://louditup.com/who-will-win-the-37th-reggae-grammy https://louditup.com/who-will-win-the-37th-reggae-grammy RIAA has announced their list of nominees for the Grammy Award for Best Reggae Album of 2023, which features a full lineup of Jamaican artists and collectives.

But who stands the highest chance of overcoming the odds and coming out on top?

The list of winning probabilities has been released by Certifiedstreams.

Koffee - Gifted - 24%

Sean Paul - Scorcha - 28%

Kabaka Pyramid - Kalling - 20%

Protoje - Third Times A Charm - 24%

Shaggy - Com Fly Wid Me - 28%

However, based on the narrow margins and the high quality of the final selections, it's really fair to say that the odds are even heading into the final balloting.

The most notable nominee is Kabaka Pyramid, who is a newcomer to the list and is backed by the Marley music machinery, but of the five albums shortlisted "Kalling" and Protoje's "Third Time's The Charm" has the most HipHop influences of the pack.

Californian Stick figure was surprisingly absent, despite pundits betting he would make the final draw alongside Jimmy Cliff who also failed to make the final round.

But with three of this year's five nominees coming out of the Reggae Revival scene, it seems a generational transistion is in progress.

Who is Your Pick for The RIAA's Reggae Album Of The Year??

On the eve of Summer 2022, Meta & The Cornerstones remain steadfast in releasing unassuming visuals that manage to pull fans back into the album's musical loop.

Without a debate the album tracks are long, some running close to 7 minutes as in the case of "Breeze" which was 1 second shy of 6:30sec.

But Meta and the Cornerstones have taken advantage of this by delivering smokey and fluid montages, which under the "right meditation" are near hypnotic.

Rastafarian from birth, Jalifa draws her heat lyric influence from pioneers and stalwarts such as Sister Nancy, Lauren Hill, and rapper Eminem, which has helped the petite artist carve out a big path in the male-dominated space.

She has shared stages with some of the region's biggest names, but it was not long ago that the spirited musical voice decided to focus on music.

Her first track "Summer Getaway", by Italian producer Marco Spatula and featured High Degree, caught the ears of producers such as House of Music and Bobby Digital and by 2015, Jalifa was a name to be heard in the Caribbean music scene.

But her latest body of work "Incient Ras" is a strong body of work that has undeniably helped her find her place among the talented female acts now pivoted for mainstream stardom.

Bulby York Taps Tanya Stephens and Malica For "Queens" https://louditup.com/Bulby York, Tanya Stephens, Malica, Reggae, https://louditup.com/Bulby York, Tanya Stephens, Malica, Reggae,

- Staff Reporter

Kingston, JA - Award-winning producer and engineer Collin ‘Bulby’ York believes that women should have more of a voice and presence in Jamaica’s music industry.

It is natural that he would pair two dynamic women, talented singer/songwriter Malica Stallworth and Dancehall icon Tanya Stephens, to drive the lead single for his untitled new album. “Queen,” set to hit all platforms on Friday, May 20th, is a pulsing collaboration between these two powerhouses that encourages women to affirm their royalty, stand in their own power, and define their own paths.

Written by emerging US based Songwriter Malica, who was recently featured on the single “Wiggle Wiggle” with Beenie Man on Bulby’’s Heartcrafted album in 2020. “If you listen to my verses, you’ll hear affirmations - ‘I know I am worthy, divine, and royal’ is an affirmation for women,” Malica says. “One of the first lines I wrote was ‘mind your manners when you talk to a Queen.’

The one thing I want women to take away from this song is to not allow yourself to be separated from your royalty.” The collaboration with Tanya Stephens was a welcome surprise to Malica, who feels that a lot of her work as a writer and singer comes from being raised on Tanya’s music. Malica cites “Who is Tanya,” from the highly acclaimed 2006 album Rebelution, as another source of inspiration for her writing on “Queen.”

VBRNTS Debuts "Higher" https://louditup.com/VBRTNS, rockers, reggae, rubadub, new artists https://louditup.com/VBRTNS, rockers, reggae, rubadub, new artists Hailing from the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn NY, emerging Reggae Artist VBRTNS is receiving the critical nods from Reggae music critics for his debut release "Higher".

Born to a Haitian Mother (Eliane Legagenur) and Jamaican father, reggae artist Professor Grizzly (Christopher Robertson), he credits his initial love of music to his father, whose frequent performances with Massive B Records Camp in the early 90s, helped inspire this young crooner to pursue of the art of music.

While he has always harboured an innate love of Reggae, the journey to becoming a wholly fledged Reggae practitioner was preceded by a few musical iterations.

Before he was VBRTNS, he was known as Irie-Child.

Before that, he had a stint as a creative within the Hip-Hop sphere As T-Rav. Under this moniker, he was discovered by the Hip-Hop icons Dead Prez in the early 2000s.

His discovery by Dead Perez would see him call Prez’s Warrior Studios his professional home base. Here he expanded his skills and acumen as an audio engineer, songwriter, technical sound engineer, producer, and artist.

In 2011, the multifaceted music maven earned his Certification in Audio Engineering and Advance Media at the Institute of Audio Research (IAR).

During his time at IAR, VBRTNS developed a variety of life-threatening illnesses which forced him to relinquish music and school simultaneously.

What started as a way to heal became a sojourn into holistic nutrition, ultimately providing him with a fresh perspective and elevation of his music precepts.

Shortly after his recovery, he migrated to Greensboro, NC, where his reggae roots bloomed, and along the journey taught himself to play the guitar which helped usher his full-fledged transition from Hip-Hop/R&B to Reggae going by the moniker Irie-Child.

Today he is VBRTNS, and has earned himself critical acclaim for his lyrical precision, content, and melodies which represent the full circle of his musical evolution and influences, churning his unique soundscape that is being hailed as a seamless fusion of Reggae's Past and Present.

His latest release "Higher" is a solid representation of this mantra and its infectious vintaged "rubadub" inspired soulfulness has already been embraced by terrestrial radio in Jamaica, UK, Australia and France, and made an impressive weekend debut on Spotify racking up over 3000+ streams in his opening weekend.
